How the suggested split works
The planner starts from a simple rule: cover your needs first (rent, food, travel, phone), keep a little for wants, and put the rest away before you spend it.
- New city: rent 35%, food 20%, travel 8%, phone 3%, fun 12%, buffer 7%, savings 15%.
- At home: no rent, so the split shifts to savings: 45% saved and a 15% buffer.
These are starting points, not rules. Move any slider and savings adjust so your plan always adds up to your stipend.
Questions
Why keep a separate buffer?
Internships come with surprises: a doctor's visit, a broken phone screen, a last-minute train home. A small buffer stops one bad week from wiping out your savings.
My rent is more than 35% of my stipend. Is that bad?
It's common in big cities. Move the rent slider to your real number and see what's left; travel and eating out are usually the easiest to trim.
