Which formula should I use?
There's no single national formula. Use the one from whoever awarded your CGPA:
- CBSE (Class 10 and 12): CGPA × 9.5.
- VTU: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
- Anna University: CGPA × 10.
- Anywhere else: look for a conversion note on your grade card or transcript, and enter it as a custom formula.
Some institutes, including several IITs, don't define an official conversion at all. If an application insists on a percentage, write your CGPA with its scale (for example 8.4/10) and mention that no official conversion exists. CGPA × 10 is the most common fallback.

Questions
Why does CBSE multiply by 9.5?
CBSE derived the 9.5 factor from its own students' past results. It is CBSE's official, published conversion for Class 10 and 12 CGPA.
Can I convert percentage back to CGPA?
Yes. Switch to "Percentage → CGPA". It reverses the same formula.
Which number should I put on a job application?
Whatever the form asks for. If it asks for CGPA, give the CGPA and its scale. If it asks for a percentage, use your university's official formula, and say which one if there's space.
